The Atlas Copco MD/ND/MDG compression heat drum dryer series represents a breakthrough in energy-efficient compressed air drying technology. Unlike traditional twin-tower adsorption dryers that waste compressed air during regeneration, these innovative dryers utilize the free heat of compression to regenerate the desiccant, achieving zero air consumption and significant energy savings.

Designed to complement the ZR/ZT oil-free screw compressor series, the MD/ND/MDG dryers deliver reliable moisture removal for industrial applications where air quality and energy efficiency are critical. With three product lines offering varying levels of performance and efficiency, these dryers provide flexible solutions for diverse compressed air system requirements.

Product Line Overview

The MD/ND/MDG series consists of three product lines, each designed to meet specific drying requirements:

MD Series: Standard compression heat drum dryers that utilize heat from the compression process for regeneration. Achieves stable -40°C pressure dew point with virtually no energy consumption.

ND Series: Enhanced models with auxiliary electric heating for applications requiring lower dew points. Combines compression heat with minimal electricity to achieve even lower pressure dew points when needed.

MDG Series: Next-generation dryers featuring air-to-air heat exchangers for dry-gas regeneration. Achieves guaranteed -40°C pressure dew point with almost zero energy consumption.

The MD/ND models cover a wide airflow range from 200 m³/min to 4000 m³/min, while MDG models are available in 450 m³/min and 1050 m³/min capacities. This range ensures compatibility with various compressor outputs across the ZR/ZT series.

Working Principle

The compression heat drum dryer operates on a simple yet innovative principle: using the heat generated during air compression to regenerate the desiccant, eliminating the need for external purge air.

How It Works

The pressure vessel is divided into two sections: a drying zone (75%) and a regeneration zone (25%). The desiccant is impregnated in a honeycomb fiberglass drum that slowly rotates through these sections.

At the final stage of compression, the hot air splits into two streams: the main stream passes through the aftercooler and enters the dryer for drying, while the secondary stream (hot unsaturated air) undergoes desiccant regeneration in the regeneration zone. For ND dryers, the hot unsaturated air is further heated by a regeneration heater to achieve lower dew points when required.

The MDG series incorporates an air-to-air heat exchanger for dry-gas regeneration, ensuring consistent -40°C pressure dew point performance with minimal energy usage.
