How a Mechanical Pressure Gauge Works
Inside the 1604401700 is a curved metal tube — a Bourdon tube — sealed at one end and open to the process pressure at the other. When pressurised air enters the tube, the cross-section tends toward a circular shape and the tube unwinds slightly. That small motion drives a geared linkage that rotates the pointer across the dial.
The mechanism is entirely mechanical: no external power, no sensor electronics, no software. This simplicity is why Bourdon gauges remain the default choice for general industrial pressure indication even as electronic transducers handle control and monitoring loops.
The scale on this gauge uses units of 100 kPa, so each major numbered division represents 1 bar. A reading of 7 on the dial means approximately 7 bar (700 kPa) of gauge pressure.
Because the Bourdon tube responds directly to pressure, the indication is instantaneous — the needle tracks pulsations from the compressor discharge as they happen. Glycerine or silicone filling is common on vibrating compressor panels to damp that pointer movement.
Why the 0–10 bar range fits most plant air systems
The majority of Atlas Copco GA-series screw compressors operate between 7 and 10 bar nominal discharge pressure. A 0–10 bar gauge places typical operating pressure in the upper half of the scale where accuracy is best and resolution is finest.
Running consistently below 3 bar or above 9 bar on this gauge would signal an unusual setpoint or a fault condition worth investigating.

Installation and Mounting
The 1604401700 screws into a threaded port on the compressor block, receiver or filter housing. Hand-tighten until the gauge seats against the mounting face, then add a quarter to half turn with a wrench on the hex bezel. That is enough to seal the connection without stressing the thin brass or steel thread form.
Over-torquing is the most common installation error on small panel gauges. It distorts the thread and can crack the bakelite or plastic case.
Before fitting the new gauge, check that the port thread is clean and apply a compatible sealant if the original assembly used one. Some installations rely on a bonded washer or an O-ring in the port rather than thread tape. Reuse the sealing method that was on the unit you are replacing.
After mounting, cycle the compressor and watch for weepage around the bezel or the process connection during the first pressure build-up.
Position and readability
Mount the gauge where the operator can see it from the normal standing position without leaning over the package. Avoid locations where the dial faces direct sunlight or sits above a hot component. Excess heat can distort the reading or accelerate ageing of the window.
